Frequently asked questions
What does beta mean?
Tonttikartta is still experimental and under active development. Features, coverage and presentation may change, and errors or interruptions are possible. Feedback helps us improve the service.
Sources and reliability
Where does the information come from?
The map brings together public sources, including authorities’ open geospatial datasets. Each section’s “?” names its sources: the provider, licence and dates, with links to the provider’s own service. The map’s credits are in its corner, and every provider with its licence is listed below. Coverage, accuracy and publication dates vary by source. Layers and information marked as external data or an external service come directly from the named provider’s own service, not from Tonttikartta’s processing; Tonttikartta is not responsible for their content, currency or availability.
How do I check the official information?
Select a property, then open the “?” on Register and location, the last card. Use the property identifier at the top of the card to find registry records. Karttapaikka opens the map location; it is not a registry extract. The National Land Survey’s instructions explain how to obtain official property, ownership and encumbrance extracts. Orders may require sign-in and payment.
For planning, building permits and restrictions, follow the document links where available and confirm the current situation with the municipality or responsible authority. General provider pages require a location or record search. Compare the source date, coverage and exact property—not just the map appearance.
Can I rely on the map for a decision?
Tonttikartta is an aid to exploration, not an official register, survey or authority decision. OPL Consulting Oy is not responsible for errors in the original public-source content and does not guarantee its accuracy, completeness or currency. Verify information with the original provider and the relevant authority before a purchase, construction project or other consequential decision.
How do I report an incorrect or mismatching detail?
Email info@tonttikartta.fi with a map link or property identifier, the layer concerned, a description of the mismatch, and a verifiable source with its date. A screenshot helps. We can investigate and correct demonstrable errors in our processing or presentation. Corrections to the original source record belong to its provider; we cannot change an authority’s register.
Does a missing marking mean there are no restrictions?
No. A layer may be switched off, visible only at certain zoom levels, unavailable or incomplete. An empty result does not prove that a restriction, feature or right is absent. Check the original source and the relevant authority.
How current is the information?
Different datasets are published and imported on different schedules. The map is not a real-time copy of every source. Check any date shown with the information and consult the provider for its latest record.
Using the map
What can I do now?
- Search by address, place, property identifier or coordinates.
- Property boundaries, basic information and building information where available.
- Map layers for the environment, forests, soil, cultural heritage and neighbourhoods.
- Planning and decision information with source documents in covered areas.
- Distance and area measurements, 3D terrain and indicative sunlight tools.
- Share a map link, print a Tonttikortti and use the service in Finnish or English.
Availability varies by location and source. Some layers appear only when you zoom in.
Can owners or agencies display property listings?
Property listings on the map are a planned feature for owners and agencies. They are not available yet, and there is no schedule or announced launch date. To discuss interest or cooperation, email info@tonttikartta.fi.
How do I find a property and explore its surroundings?
Search for an address, place name, property identifier or coordinates. Zoom in and select a property to open its details. Use Layers to choose the information shown and Tools for measurements and other ways to explore the map.
How can I see a plot’s boundaries on a map?
Search for the address or property identifier and zoom in: the property’s boundaries are drawn on the map from the National Land Survey’s cadastral data, and selecting it highlights every parcel that belongs to it. The boundaries are indicative and do not establish a boundary on the ground.
How do I find a property identifier from an address?
Search for the address and select the property on the map. Its property identifier is shown at the top of the property details, and Copy property identifier copies it. You can also search the other way round, from a property identifier to the property.
How do I find out the area of a plot?
Select the property: its details show an area calculated from the parcel boundaries on the map. It is not the official area, because the property register's area is not open data; a property register extract shows it. To measure any other area or distance, use the measuring tools under Tools.
Where can I see which zoning plan applies to a plot?
Select the property and open Standing plans under Planning: it lists the regional, master and detailed plans in force on the property, with links to the plan record and documents where the sources provide them. Coverage varies by municipality; the municipality confirms the plan in force.
Can I see an aerial photo of a plot?
Yes. Choose Aerial imagery as the base map under Layers to see the National Land Survey’s orthophotos with the property boundaries on top. Historical imagery is available as a separate layer.
Are boundaries, measurements and estimates exact?
They are indicative. Map scale, source geometry, terrain resolution and browser calculations affect the result. A map boundary does not establish a boundary on the ground, and a calculated area or sunlight estimate is not a survey or a site assessment.
Can I share or print the map?
Use the map’s sharing control to copy a link and the property’s print control to create a Tonttikortti. Keep source credits and limitations with anything you share. Source datasets retain their own licences; the service copyright does not replace them.
